Can Microneedling Get Rid of My Acne Scars?
Microneedling can greatly improve the appearance of acne scars and help you achieve a more radiant complexion. Read on to learn more about what’s involved in microneedling and how it can help you.

Acne scars are often more than just physical blemishes; they can significantly impact your self-esteem and confidence. Getting rid of these scars so you can experience smooth, radiant skin is a priority, and microneedling can help.

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a pen-like device containing fine needles. These needles create tiny punctures in the skin, stimulating the body's natural healing response and collagen production. As new collagen forms, it helps to improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and overall skin texture.

Here's what dermatologist Kelly Kinsley, MD, of North Pacific Dermatology & Aesthetics, wants you to know about microneedling and its impact on clearing acne scars.

About acne scars

Acne scars result from inflammation in the skin caused by acne lesions. In response to this inflammation, your body produces collagen to repair the damaged tissue.

During the repair process, you sometimes form raised scars (hypertrophic or keloid scars) or depressions in the skin (atrophic scars).

Acne is a common skin condition affecting about 80% of people between 11 and 30. Of those people, one in five will experience scarring

There are three types of acne scars:

Ice pick scars

These are like the tools they're named after: wide at the surface and narrowing into a point deeper in the skin. They commonly appear on the forehead and upper cheeks. Due to their depth, they can be a challenge to erase completely.

Rolling scars

Rolling scars are usually found on the lower cheeks and jaw. Their sloping edges create an uneven and wavy appearance.

Boxcar scars

Boxcar scars have sharp edges and depth, often seen on the lower cheeks and jawline.

How microneedling works on acne scars

Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries to the skin. This triggers your body's natural wound-healing process.

Your body responds by sending collagen to the areas that need healing. As your skin continues to heal, it produces new collagen and elastin fibers, which can help improve the appearance of acne scars over time.

Microneedling’s effect on acne scars

While microneedling can significantly improve the appearance of your acne scars, you should have realistic expectations. Your results vary depending on various factors, including the scars' severity, skin type, and your response to treatment.

If you have shallow or mild acne scars, microneedling can be highly effective. You can get noticeable improvements after just a few sessions. Deeper or more severe scars may require additional treatments or other complementary procedures, like laser treatments, to achieve optimal results.

Dr. Kinsley evaluates your skin and whether microneedling is right for your goals.

Before microneedling, she'll have you come for a thorough consultation to assess your skin's condition, discuss treatment goals, and tailor a customized treatment plan.

What it’s like to experience microneedling

During the microneedling procedure, Dr. Kinsely applies a topical numbing cream to your skin. Depending on the area being treated, the treatment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Following microneedling post-treatment care instructions provided by Dr. Kinsley is essential. To optimize healing and results, you'll need to avoid sun exposure for a specified period, apply soothing skincare products, and adhere to a gentle skincare routine.

Although microneedling may not completely erase all scars, it can significantly improve their appearance and boost your confidence. If you're considering microneedling for acne scars, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kinsley to learn more about how this innovative treatment can benefit you.
