What to Expect When Removing a Colorful Tattoo
Whether your tastes have changed or your tattoo no longer holds the meaning it once did, you want it gone. Removing a colorful tattoo is possible! Learn more about tattoo removal and what to expect during your procedure.

Regarding people with tattoos, as many as 44% of them regret at least one of their designs. The good news? You can get tattoos, even colorful ones, removed.

At North Pacific Dermatology & Aesthetics, dermatologist Kelly Kinsley, MD, offers laser services for tattoo removal, even for complex colored pieces.

Read on to learn what to expect during the process and how various factors influence the procedure's success, including the colors used, the ink's depth, the tattoo's age, and your skin type.

Tattoo removal begins with a consultation

Before any removal begins, you'll schedule a consultation with Dr. Kinsley. During this session, she assesses your tattoo, discusses your medical history, and explains the removal process in detail. This is the time to ask any questions you may have. Dr. Kinsley will also set realistic expectations for the outcome. Remember, not all tattoos will disappear entirely, but they may fade significantly.

Laser technology and tattoo removal

The most effective method for removing colorful tattoos is laser treatment. Different laser wavelengths target specific ink colors. For example:

  • Red, yellow, and orange inks respond well to a 532 nm wavelength
  • Green and blue inks are typically treated with a 755 nm wavelength
  • Black and dark inks are usually addressed with a 1064 nm wavelength

At North Pacific Dermatology & Aesthetics, we provide advanced laser technology, PicoWay® laser by Candela®, that can precisely target multiple colors in your tattoo. This allows for the effective breakdown of the ink particles so your body can naturally eliminate them.

Pain management and tattoo removal

People describe the sensation during laser tattoo removal as similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin. While it can be uncomfortable, we offer various pain management options, including topical anesthetics and cooling devices, to ensure your comfort.

Number of sessions required for tattoo removal

You'll need to plan multiple sessions to effectively remove your tattoo. How many sessions you'll need depends on your tattoo's complexity.

Generally, colorful tattoos require more sessions than black or dark tattoos. Most people need eight to 12 sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart, to eliminate most tattoo evidence.

Caring for your skin after tattoo removal

Proper aftercare ensures the best results and minimizes any side effects. After each session, expect to have some redness, swelling, and minor blistering. You’ll need to gently wash the area with mild soap and water and avoid any sun exposure. Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect the treated area.

Allow any scabs or blisters to heal naturally; do not pick or scratch at the tattoo. Dr. Kinsley will also recommend specific creams and ointments to promote healing.

Understanding your results

Whether or not we can completely remove your colorful tattoo depends on various factors. Results vary from person to person. Some tattoos may not fade entirely but can be significantly lightened, making them less noticeable or easier to cover with another design. Dr. Kinsley will help you understand what's possible in your case.
