When Will My Skin Stop Flaking After a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels promise brighter, smoother skin, but the effects are soon noticeable. After a chemical peel, the flaking and peeling phase is temporary but can be disconcerting. Read on to learn how long this phase can last.

Chemical peels are one of the most popular noninvasive aesthetic procedures. They're offered to improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance. Although they provide great long-term results, post-treatment flaking and peeling are common side effects.

Here at North Pacific Dermatology & Aesthetics, dermatologist Kelly Kinsley, MD, offers a range of chemical peels to help your skin look younger, clearer, healthier, and more evenly toned.

If you've recently undergone a chemical peel, are eager to see the results, and are wondering when you might see an end to the flaking, read on.

Chemical peel basics

A chemical peel is a skin treatment in which a special chemical solution is applied to the skin. This solution causes the top layer of the skin to peel off. As the skin heals, new skin forms, giving it a fresher, healthier appearance.

A chemical peel is a great way to refresh your skin, making it look younger and healthier. It is particularly helpful in addressing issues like acne and sun damage. Dr. Kinsley evaluates your skin to determine if the procedure suits you.

Not all chemical peels are the same

The extent of peeling and the duration of your recovery depends on the type and strength of the peel you underwent:

Superficial peels

Superficial peels are relatively mild. They primarily use alpha-hydroxy acids or other non-intense acids to exfoliate the outer layer of skin gently. Flaking usually starts two to three days after treatment and may last for about three to five days.

Medium peels

These peels penetrate the outer and middle layers of the skin to remove damaged skin cells. Flaking begins about two to three days after treatment and usually continues for five to seven days.

Deep peels

Deep peels are more intensive treatments that penetrate the middle layer of the skin. Flaking and peeling can start within three to four days and may last up to 14 days or longer.

The process of healing after a peel

In the first few days after your peel, your skin might feel tight and appear red. This is a normal reaction as the chemical solution starts to work. By this period's end, you might notice some flaking.

Flaking and peeling became most noticeable from days four to seven post-peel. The skin sheds its outer layer, revealing fresher skin beneath. This is the peak period for peeling; avoid picking at your skin to prevent scarring or infection.

Most of the flaking should subside for superficial and medium peels by the end of the first week. Deep peels might take longer, and flaking may continue into the second week.

Managing flaking skin

Flaking is a natural part of the healing process. Take care of your skin during this period.

Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin comfortable. Avoid heavy or oil-based products that could clog your pores. Resist the urge to pick at or exfoliate the peeling skin. Let it shed naturally to avoid causing damage or scarring.

Protect your new, sensitive skin from the sun. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even if you're indoors. Cleanse your skin with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Avoid using harsh scrubs or exfoliants until your skin has fully healed.

Follow any specific post-care instructions provided by Dr. Kinsley. This includes using recommended skincare products and avoiding certain activities or products that irritate your skin.

Is flaking after a chemical peel ever a concern

While flaking and peeling are normal after a chemical peel, certain symptoms could indicate a problem:

  • Severe redness or swelling
  • Signs of infection, such as increased pain, pus, or a fever
  • Persistent peeling or delayed healing beyond the expected time frame
