You probably associate sunscreen with summer days spent at the beach, by the pool, or playing in the blazing sun. But sun protection isn’t just for summer – it’s a year-round necessity.
Whether it's the peak of summer or the heart of winter, ultraviolet (UV) rays are always present, and protecting your skin is essential for maintaining both its health and appearance. At North Pacific Dermatology & Aesthetics, dermatologist Kelly Kinsley, MD, treats patients with sun damage and skin cancer, often caused by too much unprotected time in the sun.
Here are her tips on why and how you should stay protected from the sun year-round.
UV radiation is constant, even on cloudy days or during colder months. While the sun might feel weaker in winter, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds and reflect off surfaces like snow, ice, or water, amplifying their impact. This means your skin remains vulnerable to damage every day of the year.
Prolonged exposure to UV rays can affect the look and health of your skin. The sun is a major cause of premature aging. Fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation often result from unprotected skin over time.
UV exposure is the leading cause of skin cancers, including melanoma, the deadliest form. Sun damage can also compromise your skin’s natural defenses, leading to sensitivity and dehydration.
Protecting your skin from the sun doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some simple steps to incorporate into your daily routine:
Choose an SPF of 30 or higher to shield against UVA and UVB rays. Apply generously to all exposed areas, including your neck, ears, and hands.
Use a lip balm with SPF to protect this often-overlooked area.
Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially if you’re outdoors.
Wear protective clothing
Hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves can provide extra coverage.
Avoid direct sun exposure whenever possible, particularly during peak hours (10 am–4 pm).
Every skin tone and type benefits from sun protection. While darker skin has more melanin, which offers some natural defense, it’s not immune to sun damage or the risk of skin cancer. Dr. Kinsley can help you determine the best sunscreen for your skin type to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
